The Confuoco
In the past it was an annual event during which a large trunk of a laurel tree, covered with branches, was offered to the city authorities, which was burned in the presence of the people. According to the direction the flames took, auspices were drawn for the future, while the remains were disputed among the citizens because they were convinced that they had traumaturgical powers.
The ceremony with these characteristics was celebrated throughout the Middle Ages; later it assumed instead the meaning of an exchange of courtesies between city authorities.
Since 1933, after two centuries of interruption, the A Campanassa Association has restored the medieval tradition of the "Confuoco" ceremony, celebrated on the eve of Christmas, with the delivery of artistic ceramic vases to the Mayor of the city of Savona.
Since then, every year, on the last Sunday before Christmas, a procession winds its way from Brandale to the Town Hall square.
