Officially opened in 1853 with Giuseppe Verdi’s Attila, the Teatro Comunale Chiabrera (Chiabrera Municipal Theatre) is a historic building designed by architect Carlo Falconieri and named after poet and playwright Gabriello Chiabrera.

Mostly an opera theatre throughout the second half of the 19th century, it hosted all of the main melodrama operas, as well as the most important prose works.
Starting from 1954, it underwent a very long period of restoration, which lasted until 1963, when a high-class prose calendar was launched, in cooperation with the Ente Teatrale Italiano (Italian Theatre Institute).
After a long closure throughout most of the fifties, since 1967 the theatre has been managed by the municipal council.

The latest restoration effort was completed in 2005, allowing to completely renovate its services, furnishings and décor. Also the vault was restored after its fresco had begun coming off in October 1999.
