Palazzo del Monte di Pietà
Its walls, which whisper the stories of centuries gone by, beckon you inside. As you step through the marble entrance, you are greeted by a masterpiece of sculpture: a bas-relief of The Pity of Christ carved in slate.
Inside the building, the atmosphere carefully combines the ancient and modern. The Renaissance frescoes by Lorenzo Fasolo, such as the Announcement of the Angels, La Pietà, and the Madonna Annunziata, are gracefully combined with contemporary architectural choices, the steel and glass creating extraordinarily beautiful effects of light and shadow.
But the surprises don’t end there! During restoration works, valuable drawings and inscriptions dating back to the 15th century were uncovered beneath a layer of plaster. More evidence of a fascinating past that tell us about a palace which was once home to mercenary troops. Today Palazzo del Monte di Pietà is owned by the Agostini De Mari foundation and houses a museum of ceramics, with priceless treasures from Savona’s rich tradition of this art form.
A journey through centuries of master craftsmanship, from decorated majolica to finely crafted ceramics and works of art that reflect the history and culture of this city. Every room in the museum offers something new and fascinating, and is a tribute to the creative genius of the past masters.
